Most common types of doctoral funding
The STIC Doctoral School only accepts students who have secured funding for 3 years (the normal length of a PhD), and it is the responsibility of the PhD supervisor to help secure this funding.
Funding sources vary widely, but some of the most common include:
- Université Côte d'Azur scholarships are awarded upon selection by ED STIC, see below. When the campaign is open (usually from mid-March to mid-May), applications should be uploaded to ADUM. Candidates who have been awarded a contract may apply for a supplementary teaching assignment (64 hours of practical tutorials per year).
- Disability contracts (annual call in March-April). Contact the ED for more information. See the 2024 Campaign page of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.
- EUR DS4H grants are awarded on the basis of thematic and excellence criteria. When the campaign is open (usually from mid-March to mid-May), applications should be sent to ADUM
- 3IA grants are awarded on the basis of excellence in topics related to artificial intelligence, see la dedicated page.
- Inria grants, see dedicated page
- grants from the Conseil Régional PACA, awarded on the basis of an application relating to the subject of the doctorate.
- CIFRE funding from the ANRT for subjects shared by an industry and a research team from the ED STIC.
- grants from French research institutes: CNES, DGA, CEA...
- Campus France research grants for foreign students.
- grants from foreign governments (to be completed by the host team if the amount is insufficient)
- etc.
Most selection-based funding programs evaluate a triplet of Candidate/Subject/Supervisor, with different weights for each element depending on the selection.
Depending on the type of doctoral contract, teaching hours are included in the contract or can be undertaken during the doctorate, either as a part-time lecturer ("vacation" in Franech, ask your department for details) or as a contract doctoral student with a teaching assignment (apply to the DCME selection process).
FUNDING DEPENDING ON THE STIC DOCTORAL SCHOOL
The only funding that is dependent on the doctoral school is the funding provided by the Université Côte d'Azur. These grants are awarded on the basis of selection by the STIC doctoral school. The allocation campaign usually lasts from the beginning of March to the end of June. The procedure is as follows:
- Choose a proposal for your doctoral studies from among those proposed by the Doctoral School on the website ADUM.
- Contact your thesis advisor to assess the appropriateness of your training for your chosen field - an essential step in enabling the advisor to support your application.
- Complete and submit the application on the dedicated platform.
- The applications are then reviewed by a committee, which compiles a list of candidates who are eligible to continue in the selection process.
Candidates who pass this first stage are then invited to a hearing (audition in French) before the committee.
At the end of the hearings, this committee will propose a final ranking with a ranked supplemental list, which it will submit to the Doctoral Council for approval.
Candidates who have been awarded a fellowship may apply for a supplemental teaching assignment (64 hours of practical tutorials per year).
